Lecture Title: TBA
Dr. David Limbrick is Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. He is a board-certified pediatric neurosurgeon and internationally recognized leader in the care of children with hydrocephalus, Chiari malformations, and complex craniovertebral junction anomalies. His clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of pediatric neurosurgical disorders, including both open and endoscopic approaches.
Dr. Limbrick’s research integrates basic, translational, and clinical domains to advance the understanding and treatment of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) disorders. He serves as Principal Investigator of the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN) and Chair of its Biomarkers and Neuroimaging Core. In 2010, he established the HCRN CSF Repository, which now contains over 3,000 biospecimens supporting multi-institutional investigations into hydrocephalus pathophysiology and neurodevelopmental outcomes.
He currently leads several NIH- and PCORI-funded multicenter trials, including the U01-funded Endoscopic versus Shunt Treatment of Hydrocephalus in Infants (HCRN), and an R01 on ETV and CPC mechanisms in experimental models. His work has helped shape treatment paradigms for post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus and pioneered the use of advanced imaging tools—including diffusion tensor imaging and resting-state functional MRI—to study brain injury in hydrocephalus.
Dr. Limbrick has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications, multiple book chapters, and has edited two books. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, Fluids and Barriers of the CNS, and Neurosurgery Practice, where he is Pediatric Section Editor. He holds leadership roles across multiple national organizations, including Treasurer of the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery, Treasurer of the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships, and Research Chair for the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons.
He is also a dedicated mentor and educator, having co-directed pediatric neurosurgery fellowship and residency programs and contributed to NIH-funded career development initiatives. His work continues to impact clinical care, research infrastructure, and the training of the next generation of neurosurgeon-scientists.
